I don't know about you, but carrying multiple keys for all the locks I use to secure my valuables was a pain in my pocket. Yes, I said "was," but not anymore. Even with having sets of matching padlocks with one key, I still had several keys for all the various styles of locks to secure my RV valuables and equipment.
Recently, someone brought to my attention a new style of locks of various kinds that would work with one key. Like me, those of you who still use an ignition key to start your vehicle engine, that is the key you can use to code all the locks from BOLT. The BOLT series of locks lets you code all locks to work with one key – your driving vehicle ignition key!
I procured several BOLT lock styles to replace six other keyed locks I used to secure my RV and various equipment. All I had to do with these BOLT locks was to insert my truck’s ignition key into the BOLT lock, turn it once, and the lock permanently learns the key code.
“But, Dave, I only have an electronic key fob for my vehicle, not a regular car key,” you might be saying. I get it. Chances are, I suspect you probably have an old vehicle key lying in that ever-so-full junk drawer. You likely have an old vehicle key that will work with the Bolt locks.

All the above locks accepted my truck key without any glitches or failures, even after more than two years of use. The only thing I haven't been able to do so far is to verify the locks' integrity. I hope to come across another Ram truck owner who has the same style ignition key. I want to ensure that a similar key cannot open my coded locks.
The best part about the padlocks I like is the 5/16" diameter of the shackle. It fits in places I could not place padlocks of similar body size.
I had no problem installing the Toolbox Latch Retro Kit. It fit perfectly, and it is so much easier to lock and unlock with my truck key. The only concern I have is leaving the truck with someone else who should not be getting into my toolbox. To prevent wrongful entry when someone else has my truck key, I installed a swivel hasp and keep a separate lock and key set handy.
Bolt has several other lock styles available for many vehicles with an ignition key. Visit their Amazon store at Bolt on Amazon to find the lock that may work for your vehicle.
